RALEIGH — A request for $220 million in bonds to fund water and sewer projects in Raleigh was approved by the Local Government Commission during its first meeting of 2026.

The Local Government Commission (LGC), chaired by North Carolina Treasurer Brad Briner, oversees the fiscal health and debt management of more than 1,100 towns, municipalities and local governments across the state.

Part of the funding would go toward the Crabtree Valley Sewer Improvement Project to increase sewer system capacity to accommodate future needs and add a dedicated sewer line installed behind Crabtree Valley Mall.

According to Briner’s press release, the bond funds for the City of Raleigh’s projects will also be used to upgrade the Smith Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, Lake Benson and Lake Wheeler dam improvements, Mine Creek Outfall sewer line replacement, and a West Neuse Sewer interceptor pipe replacement, as well as other line and sewer replacement needs.

Another approved item from the agenda included more than $922,000 for the City of Roxboro in Person County to buy five police vehicles, one fire truck, one garbage truck and one asphalt roller for street repair. The funding will be done through installment financing so the city can pay back the funds over time.

Additionally, the LGC received a report on a bond issued by the City of Monroe in Union County that will refund previous bonds at a lower interest rate with a savings of more than $484,000.
