RALEIGH — On New Year’s Eve, the Washington Monument was lit up like a candle with an America 250 theme as the country enters its 250th anniversary year.

“The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, the organization responsible for the national celebrations.

The illuminations on the Washington Monument have repeated each day since New Year’s eve and ended Monday evening.

A number of celebratory images were projected onto the monument that night, including the America 250 logo and highlighting the nation’s founders, as well as national achievements such as the NASA’s trip to the moon.
