STANLY COUNTY — The county’s four high school boys’ tennis teams have completed their 2025 seasons after finishing up regular season and postseason play.
The West Stanly Colts (9-9, 6-4 Rocky River) landed in third place in the RRC standings, sitting behind first-place Piedmont (12-7, 10-0 RRC) and second-place Central Academy (12-4, 7-2 RRC).
The Colts then received a No. 11 seed and first-round bye in the NCHSAA 2A state playoff bracket, setting up a second-round matchup with No. 6 Southwestern Randolph (11-3, 8-2 Piedmont) where West came away with a 5-4 win on April 30.
In a 5-0 defeat, West fell short in its third-round action against the No. 14 Lincoln Charter Eagles (14-6, 9-3 Catawba Shores) on Monday.
Junior one-singles player Nicolas Smith (11-5) and junior two-singles Ethan Barringer (9-5) finished with West’s top individual records this season.
On April 30, the Eagles had previously ended the postseason hopes of the Yadkin Valley Conference-winning and third-seeded North Stanly Comets (13-2, 6-0 YVC), who went undefeated in league play but suffered a 5-2 second-round loss to Lincoln Charter in the 2A bracket after a first-round bye.
While it marked North’s first loss since an 8-1 road loss at Cox Mill (11-4, 6-0 Greater Metro) on March 18, the Comets still came away from this season with their third-consecutive conference title.
Sophomore one-singles player Rex Wang (13-1) and senior three-singles player Hayden Towne (12-2) finished with North’s top individual records this season.
As for Gray Stone Day (11-5, 4-2 YVC), who finished second in the Yadkin Valley Conference standings behind the Comets, the squad generated more wins this season (11) than it did in the past three seasons combined (nine).
Senior three-singles player Max Foote (9-5) and senior four-singles player Tyler Conforti (8-4) finished with Gray Stone’s top individual records this season.
The Knights were given a No. 7 seed in the state tournament and faced off with No. 10 Mount Airy (18-3, 9-2 Northwest) in the first-round of the 1A bracket on April 30. The Granite Bears came away with an 8-0 victory over Gray Stone.
The South Stanly Rebel Bulls (0-6, 0-6 YVC) went winless in their six matches this season; the Bulls have not had a winning campaign since their 11-1 (8-0 YVC) campaign back in 2022.
NCHSAA tournament action will now continue without Stanly County’s teams with fourth-round action set for May 13, regionals on May 15, and state championships on May 20.
