Incumbents face primary, general election challenges

ALBEMARLE — Stanly County voters will face a long Republican primary ballot in 2018, and all county voters will see contested races from top to bottom on the general election ballot in November. According to releases from the state Democratic and Republican parties, every state Senate and House of Representatives seat will have at least two candidates. The state Democratic Party announced last week that they have fielded a candidate for all 170 N.C. legislative races while the N.C. GOP announced 169 Republican candidates and the state party’s backing of an independent who is facing off against a Democratic incumbent.

In Stanly County, the Republican race for Sheriff includes three challengers to incumbent Sheriff George T. Burris. Each seat on the county Board of Commissioners will have a primary or general election challenge. Rep. Justin Burr has a challenger in Wayne Sasser of Albemarle with the winner facing Democrat Karen Webster of Concord for the 67th N.C. House district. Norwood resident Bill Sorenson will face current state House Rep. Carl Ford in the GOP primary for Senate district 33. New London resident Clyde Cupples, a Republican, will face incumbent Democrat Rep. Ken Goodman in November for N.C. House district 66.

Three-term incumbent Rep. Richard Hudson will face one of three Democratic challengers in the race for U.S. House 8th district.
