Wake Forest’s Scotty Washington blocked a 39-yard field goal attempt with five seconds to play, allowing the Demon Deacons to hold on for a 20-19 victory over host Appalachian State in a nonconference game Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.

Georgia State 28, Charlotte 0

The 49ers fell to 0-4 after being blanked by Georgia State. The Panthers dominated the game, holding the ball for 40:41 and converting 9 of 17 third downs, while Charlotte had just 19:19 time of possession thanks in part to two turnovers and a 3-for-15 effort on third down.

East Carolina 41, UConn 38

The Pirates got their first win of the season behind quarterback Thomas Sirk’s 426 passing yards and three touchdowns to receiver Davon Grayson. Grayson finished with 11 catches for 223 yards, and ECU held on despite a push from the Huskies.
